The waters were rising quickly around the 250 cows marooned on the only piece of dry land on a Patetonga Farm, but the animals were stubbornly refusing to move. To the rescue came Buck and his owner Stu Husband, farmer and Waikato Regional Councillor chair of integrated catchment services. “We were having a briefing about the floods when a call came in that a farmer was having difficulty moving stock which were stranded, so I fetched my Huntaway Buck and we went to see if we could help.” Cows can and will swim, but sometimes they need a bit of encouragement, says Stu and that’s exactly what Buck and his loud bark provided. “The water was bloody cold and we had to swim to the cows and then get them to swim out. But it worked and Buck had a great time.” The cows were on one of many farms inundated in the April floods brought by ex-Cyclone Cook.
